The 10-story, 490,000 square foot building will be located on the university’s east La Jolla campus and play an integral role in the UC San Diego Health System. The structure adds 245 patient beds and three new hospitals: the Cancer Hospital, the Hospital for Women and Infants, and the Hospital for Advanced Surgery. Enclos is providing comprehensive design/build services for the medical center’s building facade, including 205,419 square feet of curtainwall. Project scope also includes a 9,637 square foot point-fixed structural glass facade wall incorporating glass fins, 5,363 square feet of column covers and panels, and 3,867 square feet of glazed guardrails. The architect’s design called for an enclosure system flexible enough for numerous wall geometries, including flat, segmented, curved and folded panel conditions. Enclos developed a unitized curtainwall that showcases more than 40 different radiused dimensions throughout the project, including both concave and convex surfaces. As a result, this freeform curved structure is able to minimize traditional 90-degree building corners and maximize day lighting simultaneously. Unique considerations include varying glass makeups between flat and curved surfaces that must aesthetically match but adhere to unique performance attributes. Greene Science Center, the first building to break ground at Columbia University's Manhattanville Campus in West Harlem. The 362,700 square foot Science Center is part of phase one of the Manhattanville expansion, and is scheduled for completion in 2015. The Center will house the Mind, Brain and Behavior Initiative, led by Columbia’s Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientists to fight diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other neurological afflictions. The 10-story Science Center incorporates 175,988 square feet of building envelope, including six wall types and a series of metal and glass canopies and vestibules. Indianapolis is the home of Wishard Memorial Hospital, serving all of central Indiana. A referendum in 2009 was approved by an overwhelming 85% of voters, paving the way for the construction of a new facility to replace the current outdated building. The $754 million project is scheduled to start this summer, with construction of the new facility to commence in spring of 2011. Sealed bids for the building enclosure package were opened on April 26th. Adam Peine of Enclos — a native and lifelong resident of Indianapolis — attended the bid opening that established the firm as the low bidder. “We are excited to be involved with such an important project for our local community,” Peine says. “We may be a local Midwest company, but we are bringing world-class technology and know-how to meet the demanding requirements of this building enclosure.” Peine will be running the job for Enclos, overseeing the firm’s local union labor force and managing the local buyout program. “In addition to participating in the construction of a top-quality hospital, we look forward to working with city leaders to make a positive contribution to the community, as we have done in other communities in which we have worked,” Peine says. The new hospital will pursue LEED Silver certification, and if successful would not only become the Indiana’s lone LEED Silver healthcare facility, but among only ten newly constructed hospitals in the nation to achieve LEED Silver status or higher. Reusing the old urban site is among the LEED credits the new facility will earn for its many sustainable features.
