The 52-story Gas Company Tower was among the 100 tallest buildings in the world (at the time of completion), and one of the many on that list featuring advanced exterior wall technologies by Enclos. With its shimmering blue glass crown, a recognizable symbol of the company’s iconic blue flame, the building enlivens the skyline of downtown Los Angeles. Located adjacent to important civic spaces, the tower’s base activates the street with shops, signage, and art. It is the fifth tallest building in Los Angeles.
The project site is located next to the recently renovated Los Angeles Central Library, and is the second building of the Library Square Redevelopment Project. Gas Company Tower’s building’s base at 5th Street and Grand Avenue rests on the edge of LA’s famous Bunker Hill business district, among many of downtown’s most bustling retail vendors.
Transitions at the setbacks, notch, and crown added significant complexity to all aspects of the facade program. The Enclos team assembled fabricated metal and glass into unitized panels in a nearby factory. Fabrication and delivery were carefully sequenced to keep on-site material inventories at a minimum due to the highly constrained site and its dense urban surroundings.
