ENCLOS AWARDED CONTRACT FOR SCIENCE CENTER AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
Firm’s advanced facade technology experience secures bid for Manhattanville campus project
EAGAN, MN – April 13, 2011 - Columbia University has selected Enclos as the facade contractor for the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, the first building to break ground at Columbia University's Manhattanville Campus in West Harlem. The 362,700 square foot Science Center is part of phase one of the Manhattanville expansion, and is scheduled for completion in 2015. The Center will house the Mind, Brain and Behavior Initiative, led by Columbia’s Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientists to fight diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other neurological afflictions.
The 10-story Science Center incorporates 175,988 square feet of building envelope, including six wall types and a series of metal and glass canopies and vestibules. High performance structural facades and double-skin walls are also included in the program. Enclos’ experience with highly transparent, energy efficient and acoustically advanced facade technology was a prime reason for the firm being selected as the contractor.
The U.S. Green Building Council has selected the Columbia University Manhattanville Campus expansion for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Neighborhood Design pilot program. The program aims to “integrate the principles of smart growth, urbanism and green building for neighborhood design.” Enclos applied its facade technologies to optimize the Science Center’s green agenda with attention to the building’s northern climate.
Design architect Renzo Piano Building Workshop, with executive architect Davis Brody Bond Aedas, were selected to help create the first phase of Columbia’s expansion. Lend Lease is the lead construction management firm, with the McKissack Group alongside as a core team member to handle the construction of phase one. The construction groups were selected based upon their experience with large-scale projects and the participation of minority, women and local businesses in major development efforts. Columbia predicts that the Manhattanville expansion will create 6,000 new university jobs and an average of 1,200 construction jobs annually for nearly a quarter century.
“This is a big win for us,” says Gregg Sage, owner of Enclos, who personally traveled to New York to meet with the owner and design team to shake hands over the deal. “We are extremely excited to be involved with this elite building team and cutting-edge facade design. We are literally pushing the envelope in many important aspects on this project, progressing the state of the art in advanced building facades.”
Phase one will also include new buildings for the Columbia Business School, the School of International and Public Affairs, and the School of the Arts. The $6.3 billion Manhattanville expansion project is scheduled for completion sometime around 2030, with 16 buildings totaling 8 million square feet located across a 17-acre campus.
